Broc Tickle says it took just two days to sign a deal with MotoConcept Honda after first testing their CRF450R.
It was announced last month Tickle would join the team in place of Justin Hill, who was initially named in the 2021 team announcement before making a surprising split with the team.
The deal came as yet another lifeline for the popular 450SX contender, who was prepared to race as a privateer for the upcoming Supercross championship.
Tickle returned to racing in 2020 after serving an anti-doping sanction and was set to race in his own effort before scoring a guest role at the now defunct JGR Suzuki team.
His Supercross return was hindered by injury, but he was able to land another fill-in role at Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing for the Pro Motocross series.
With just a handful of opportunities available for 2021, the 31-year-old needed a stellar outdoor campaign to cement himself a deal, but it wasn’t meant to be despite showing flashes of brilliance.
Tickle indicated to PulpMX that he was discussions with MotoConcepts Honda following Pro Motocross, however those talks fell through and the team was eventually announced.
The former 250SX West champion suggested he caught wind of Hill’s departure and reached out to MCR manager Tony Alessi, and a test on the bike was immediately scheduled for the following day.
“I thought, I’m going to text Tony just to check in and see what’s going on. He actually called me and said, ‘Do you want to ride the bike tomorrow?’
“There was no commitment from his side at all. He just wanted me to ride the bike. That’s kind of how it started.
“I rode the bike and it went well. Then I signed a contract two days later or so.
“It was kind of a blessing, obviously, because doing my own program is great and sounds awesome, but let’s be honest, everybody knows it’s not easy to do it on your own, especially with what’s going on in the world. Funding isn’t really everybody’s priority at the moment.”
How do you think Tickle will stack up in 2021 while riding the 2020 model MotoConcepts Honda CR450R? Let me know in the comments below.
