Tara Leigh Calico, born on February 28, 1969, is an American woman who mysteriously vanished near her residence in Belen, New Mexico, on September 20, 1988. Her disappearance has long been suspected to involve a kidnapping.
In July 1989, a disturbing Polaroid photograph depicting an unidentified young woman and a young boy, both seemingly bound and gagged, came to public attention. This photograph was discovered in a convenience store parking lot in Port St. Joe, Florida. Strikingly, family friends of Tara Calico believed that the woman in the picture bore a resemblance to her. They promptly contacted Tara's mother, who cooperated with investigators and closely examined the Polaroid. She came to the belief that the woman in the photograph was indeed her missing daughter, factoring in the passage of time, changes in appearance, and the absence of makeup. Furthermore, she noted a scar on the woman's leg that matched one Tara Calico had.
Scotland Yard conducted an analysis of the photograph and reached the conclusion that the woman depicted was Tara Calico. However, a separate analysis performed by the Los Alamos National Laboratory offered a differing perspective. Their examination disputed the identification. Meanwhile, an FBI analysis of the photograph yielded inconclusive results, leaving the mystery surrounding Tara Calico's disappearance and the Polaroid photograph unresolved.
