Dr. Larry Baucom leads the sixth week of “Becoming More” - a series that follows the life of Moses.

Exodus 4:1-17

Moses, the one that God chose to free his people, doubted his ability to carry out God’s will - even after God told him many times that he could. Do you ever doubt what you are meant to do with your life? Do you ever make excuses to stay the same and not go through the uncomfortable process of change?

1. There are many excuses to keep us in the comfort zone.

Moses needed assurance that he wasn’t going to make a fool of himself (or end up killed once he returned to the place where the death penalty was waiting for him). God showed and told Moses of the signs (the staff turning to a snake, his hand becoming diseased, the water turning to blood) to boost his confidence that he would be able to lead the people out of bondage - that people would believe he was sent by God.

2. Our pre-conceptions often limit us from seeing clearly.

Oftentimes, we are our harshest critics. Sometimes we doubt ourselves too much, but sometimes we really aren’t prepared or ready for what life brings. How do we deal with that? Moses felt he wasn’t strong enough with his ability to speak, so God sent him Aaron to help. God chose Moses even though he was not perfect; some might say Moses was chosen because he was not perfect. When you doubt yourself, remember that God sees and cares about your character, not your talents and abilities at this moment.

3. Often the greater risk is found in inactivity.

God wanted Moses to agree to go without using fear to force him to go - he wanted an enlightened leader, not a scared one. Moving out of your comfort zone is what builds character - open your heart to what God has for you and see how your life will change.
