Building trust with your bird is very important. This will help make the bond between you and your bird much more stronger. You can do this by spending quality time with your bird everyday. Birds need time to feel comfortable around new surroundings and people.
It took me almost 1 year to get Ricco to where he is at now. Remember not all birds are the same, so never force a bird to do something it does not want to do. This will only brake the trust and bond that you are trying to make with your bird.
