The Poster. The hunt is on to find the model Spatz employee for a worldwide advertising campaign, and most of the staff will stop at nothing for a chance to get their hands on the prize. Meanwhile, Karen has her sights set on becoming the second Mrs Frapelli when it transpires that the company's owner is divorcing his wife. This episode was originally broadcast on Thursday, 31st January, 1991.

It's difficult to tell which is the 'A' story and which is the 'B' story in this one, which is curious considering all the action for one of them takes place entirely off-camera. I really enjoy the way we get a full picture of the romantic exploits purely from the in-between bits. I may be looking too deeply, but I sensed that Karen's character is taking a few cues from Jessica Rabbit and the Alfred Hitchcock film Rebecca - that's when she's not in a rare wonderful mood and getting people's name right, or crying that she's an "emotional pauper". What a roller-coaster of an episode she has!

There are some very funny moments throughout, and a few odd ones, too. The vegetarian burger bit made me laugh, and all the more so with the revelation of the bet. Stanley's political speech is wonderfully out of character, but stranger is TJ longingly calling Karen beautiful and the way he loses his temper while taking the photos. That said, the civil war within the restaurant once the competition is on leads to some top class bickering, with Dexter's line telling Vince to go back to the Village People taking on a different meaning all these years later, given the song he's now world famous for having sung on. (Pink Windmill fans know what I mean.) On a quick technical note, though, has a joke been edited out when Karen asks, "How do I get to meet the son..." around 4:50? It just sounds to my ears like the line has been cut short. A slightly risque gag censored? Probably not, but something's a bit off there.

A guest star you may recognise is Clive Rowe, who was a care worker in The Story of Tracy Beaker, plus was in that Doctor Who special when they killed Kylie. Alibe Parsons, meanwhile, was also in Doctor Who back in the 80s, an episode of Marmalade Atkins (from the Thames kids' department, like Spatz, of course), and the film Aliens rather impressively, among many other credits.

Stay tuned at the beginning and end for some Children's ITV continuity featuring Jeanne Downs (but not Scally). For some reason, Jeanne introduce's next week's episode, which she corrects afterwards. Also note the ads at the beginning which, apart from the Toppas one, don't really seem to have been targeted particularly well at all, unless it's just me.

Grateful thanks to Joe for lending me this tape.
