Early in my career, when I had bad shoots, I'd sometimes go home thinking "I hope they don't book me again" not realising that I could just say 'no' if they tried to. It's taken me a long time to develop the confidence to tell clients if I want to discontinue our relationship, but having had my hand forced by a couple of working relationships gone bad, I talk you through my decision-making process as well as how I went about extricating myself from the few situations where I've felt compromised by a photographer's bad behaviour.
I'm not perfect at this, and have failed to be sufficiently assertive many times in my career. So if I can help other people, models or not, to 'fire' clients who they don't enjoy working with, I'd very much like to. Cos being photographed doesn't really steal your soul, but sometimes it can feel like it, when the camera's in the hands of someone you're not comfortable with.
With thanks to Destiny's Child, for a song that's provided me with a career's worth of inspiration for aiming at independence in everything.
