There are few things in this world I find as addictive as my son’s laughter. And there are few things that get him laughing as hard as when I tickle him — in particular on his shoulder blades or his belly. But the other day, after tickling him several times in a row, he started crying. And it got me thinking: Does he like this as much as I do?

In particular, I was reminded of my own experiences as a child, being tickled relentlessly by my brother, or an older relative, and downright hating it. As much as I may have looked like I was having a good time, I wasn’t.

That's because, according to new evidence reported in the Cell Press journal Current Biology on October 19, infants in the first four months of life apparently feel that touch and wiggle their feet without connecting the sensation to you.
