Introduction
Shibari (japanisch: to tie, to weave) is the ‘art of tying‘, which relates on the artistically tied object, meant the destination. In Japan it is more common to speak of Kinbaku, which means ‘the way of tying’ and what relates to the process, meant the route. ‘In the land of Shinto tying with rope (nawa) is a holy act. To tie is a basic part of Japanese culture. Everything holy, in which the Japanese recognize ‘kami’ (goodness, holyness), they tie or wrap round with ‘nawa’. What lies behind the rope is holy und so tying connects the holy with the human.’ (Miyabi Kyodo)
In Europe the art of tying is mostly known as ‘bondage’ and being known as part of the bdsm scene. We like to show Shibari or bondage can be more than just erotic fantasy. Furthermore rope art has an essential aestetic aspect, which can be combined with other forms of presentation and movement.
