Romans 8:13 “For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” The Holy Spirit and your flesh are in an epic conflict with one another. The Holy Spirit that dwells inside you wants to live for God, but for most of your life you have trained yourself to obey your natural flesh which is against God and even hostile to God. Romans 8:7 says “For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.” The flesh wants to live for and please itself . The Spirit wants to live for and please God. There’s a war going on inside you.

The good news is that your flesh can be re-trained naturally obey the Holy Spirit. You might be asking how? By “putting to death the deeds of the body” by cutting off their supply of nourishment until they wither. Apostle Paul puts it like this is 1 Corinthians 9:27 “But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.” It’s morbid to allow your fleshly desires rule and reign in your life. Galatians 5:19-21 says “Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” The Apostle warns that if anyone does any of this will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

How does fasting help to overcome sexual desires:

• When you fast to learn to say no to your body, to the most basic and powerful desire of eating food, everyone loves food. When you can gain control over your body’s basic desire for food, you can learn to control your body’s desire for anything even burning sexual desires. Mastering the highest level of spiritual discipline gains you instant mastery over the every flashy desires. Nothing teaches your flesh to submit to the Spirit more powerfully than fasting. Fasting breaks spiritual bondage. It is a bitter death-blow to the flesh, and once the flesh is mastered by fasting, it no longer has control over you. It stops being your default reaction.

• Fasting helps you focus on listening to the voice of God and reflecting on your relationship with Him. It sharpens your dependency on God and opens your heart to His love and leading. As Jesus’ ministry begins to near towards Jerusalem and towards the events that would lead to his eventual arrest, trial, and death, he begins to speak very specifically to people about their commitment to him and their discipleship. In this passage from Luke 14:28-30 Jesus says “For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’” Jesus challenges the large crowds to consider the cost of their commitment before embarking on it. He does not want lukewarm Christians, and He knows that following Him is hard. It will take sacrifice, dedication, encouragement, and for some considerable persecution. Your own walk with Jesus will require the same, its not just professing belief, it is living those beliefs out in an often hostile culture and world. Jesus’ words challenge you to consider the cost of your discipleship, and ultimately your commitment to Him. Fasting helps you to take stock of your walk with Jesus.
