New Series / Waiting for God in the Darkness

“Consider who bears you up and carries you through your sufferings for Christ. Is it your grace or His that is sufficient for such a work...He might withdraw His grace, and leave you to your own cowardice and unbelief, and then you would soon show yourself in your colors. The stoutest champions for Christ have been taught how weak they are if Christ steps aside.”
— WILLIAM GURNALL - PURITAN MINISTER (1616-1679)
Out of the thousands of audio journal recordings I have made in the last ten years, these are by far the most humiliating to share.
In thirty years of believing in Christ, there have been some very difficult years, but none of them have been more terrifying or lonely than 2018! If my faith was ever pushed to the limit, if my hope in Christ ever almost flickered out, if the time ever came where I truly had moments of feeling abandoned by God, or times I almost gave up on my faith in Christ and my ministry, it was the year of 2018.
In 2018, I had the exact experience which Puritan minister William Gurnall described in the quote above. God stripped away all of His grace, and all of his perceivable presence from my life and heart, just after completing six years of the most abundant and fruitful work for His kingdom.
Was He punishing me for some terrible sin or disobedience?
Or, was He thoroughly pruning me in a highly unusual way, to prepare me for even more fruitfulness? There was no way for me to know while I was walking through the darkness of 2018.
Looking back, just two years later, I can say this was not only the most terrifying year of my life, but also the most profound. By the end of the year, I would have such a deep revelation of John 15, and what Christ meant when He said, “apart from me, you can do nothing.” God willing, after 2018, it will be extremely difficult for me to ever forget just how weak and pathetic I am part from the enabling power of Jesus Christ!
“Perhaps now the greatest evidence I have of the existence of God, is not when He showed up in my life, but when He left.”
— MICHAEL S. CHRISWELL
The other important part of 2018 is the walk by faith I had to do regarding the Tiny House build. Even though Father took away the grace for work and then the grace to live above my flesh continued to recede throughout the year, He was still expecting me to walk by faith in the promise for our Tiny House build. There is much to learn and to praise God from this journey as well.
