This era, characterized by both population growth and decline, saw significant shifts in land use, economic activity, and societal structures.

The century began with a period of burgeoning population, placing immense pressure on the available resources. This prompted ambitious land reclamation projects, particularly in areas of fen and marshland, seeking to expand the agricultural frontier. Romney Marsh in Kent serves as a prime example, transitioning from grazing land in the early twelfth century to more intensive cultivation and occupation by the thirteenth century. This expansion was marked by the emergence of pioneering farmsteads venturing onto newly reclaimed land. However, the tide turned in the fourteenth century, witnessing a decline in farmsteads and a persistent depopulation that extended into the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. This retreat from previously settled areas was accompanied by the infilling of many medieval drainage ditches, signifying a contraction in agricultural activity and a shift in land use patterns.
