MESSAGE
The Church: Defined
Ephesians 2:19–22 (ESV) So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
1. The Church is... A household we belong to.
We are members of God’s household. We’re not outsiders looking in, we’re insiders with access to all of the blessings of God.
Hebrews 3:6
2. The Church is... Built on the word of God.
The word of God forms the foundation and we are building on that foundation. It is basis for everything we believe thus impacting everything we do.
Isaiah 28:16
1 Corinthians 3:11
2 Timothy 3:14–17
3. The Church is... Anchored by Jesus.
Jesus came for a purpose and the purpose was to redeem us from our bondage to sin and give us freedom in Him. Jesus never lost focus on His purpose nor did He waver in His love for us.
Isaiah 50:7
Luke 9:51
Ephesians 5:25–27
4. The Church is... A family for nourishment and growth.
The church is the body of Christ and the place where we encourage one another, challenge one another, love one another, and build one another up.
1 Thessalonians 5:11
Hebrews 10:24–25
John 13:34–35
We are the church, connected to each other in our local body, connected to believers throughout the world worshiping in all kinds of ways today, and connected to believers who have gone before us and will come after us.
