Shibari in CMYK.
ShibOri is an ancient printmaking and fabric-dyeing technique, which originated from Japan. One of the most well-known shibori methods is when the fabric is wrapped around a core of rope, wood or other material, and bound tightly with string or thread. The areas of the fabric that are against the core or under the binding would remain undyed.
We used to think of traditional Japanese shibori pieces done in indigo, but the earliest examples from the Far East and Asia also show that such natural pigments as red, yellow and green were also widely used.
ShibAri - an ancient Japanese practice of knot tying, which originated as a method of restraining captives and a form of torture. It later morphed into the erotic bondage Kinbaku, which literally translates as “the beauty of tight binding” in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
In this performance the artist brings both practises into her studio-space, where she combines a playful amateur approach, Japanese performing artist Haruka Fukao (https://harururu.wixsite.com/haefly) and inkjet printer inks - Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key(Black).
