Eighty prospective jurors have been subpoenaed, Mr. Bugliosi said. He added that it was possible that as many as 300 potential jurors might be examined. The defense and the prosecution have 80 peremptory challenges, which means that each side can dismiss up to 40 jury candidates without explanation.
The prosecutor also said that it was possible that Manson and his co‐defendants would be bound and gagged or removed from the courtroom during the trial if they engaged in the same type of “disruptive” behavior that has plagued the pretrial hearings.
Last week, Manson and the three young women stood with their backs to the judge when ever they were brought into the courtroom. On Friday, wrestling match between Manson and three bailiffs broke out when the judge ordered the seating of the defendant.
During pretrial hearing this afternoon, however, the four sat quietly as the judge and the attorneys discussed a number of motions.
