In 1864, Confederate officer Patrick Cleburne proposed arming and emancipating slaves to address the Confederacy's dire military situation. With the Union gaining momentum and the Confederacy facing devastating defeats, Cleburne's idea seemed like a last-ditch effort to turn the tide of the war. Despite controversy and opposition, the Confederate government eventually passed a bill allowing slave enlistment in March 1865, but it was too late to save the Confederacy. The proposal exposed the contradictions at the heart of the Confederate cause, revealing a society willing to risk everything, even its most cherished beliefs, to achieve victory. Ultimately, the Confederacy's failure to adapt to changing realities led to its downfall, and the institution of slavery was destroyed.
