Up next the Mike Reno singer from the 80s rock band Loverboy breaks down one of their signature songs. It rocked the 80s. It’s a song that put ‘em on the map and started their rise to play stadiums. Mike Reno and guitarist Paul Dean met at a warehouse where the guitarist was jamming with his new band. Reno asked if he could belt out a few songs and it was so electrifying the two decided to collaborate right then and their! After they had this first hit some people read a little bit too deeply into the lyrics and claimed the song was about sadomasochism and bondage. This shocked the singer… The band clearly didn’t write it about this but now it’s become lumped in with that. The interview and story is coming up next on Professor of Rock.

I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs and albums. Stories you won’t find anywhere else. Today we are getting the direct story of one of the early 80s great hard rock songs straight from the singer. It’s Turn Me Loose by Loverboy and singer Mike Reno. This song was written by the guitarist Paul Dean and signer Mike Reno after they met at a Ware house. After jamming together They knew they had to be in a band and they wrote this scorcher. Well just so happens that in the years following The S&M/leather community decided that there were sadomasochistic overtones in the lyrics. They thought the lyrics about being tied down, being on your knees, and so on made the song an anthem for their activities . Of course Loverboy didn’t intend this at all and were pretty SHOCKED at this interpretation..
Even more shocking is the fact that the song is part of the playlist for so called dungeons where this kind of S and M activity takes place. Oh boy. that’s about as far as I’ll go into that subject. Ha ha. In the book MTV ruled the World Loverboy guitarist Paul Dean said that making the music video was interesting because the director thought that the song was a parody so he wanted to make it a comedy… even though the song was written as a serious take down on an unfaithful woman.
The guys didn’t protest knowing the marketing power of MTV. This song is also a funny soundtrack to a scene in the film Wet Hot American summer. In this interview Mike also tells us how the band got their name and the origin of the headband trend he set back in day.
