Vivekachoodamani 01 | V1 |Introduction, Glory of Bhagavan Shankaracharya, 7 questions
- A student of Advaita Vedanta is expected to have studied the three Foundational Texts: Bhagavad Geeta, Upanishads & Brahma Sutra. They are called Prasthana Trayi
-The Upanishads are not easy to understand since they were revelations to the Rishis. To help us enter Upanishads, Bhagavan Shankaracharya ji has created Auxiliary texts called Prakarana Granthas in which one small aspect of Vedanta is elaborated upon. Vivekachudami is one such Prakaranagrantha. Prakarana Granthas are introduction to Upanishads.
-In Vivekachudamani, upto 100+ verses talk about how to master our inner world. Human Beings have become masters of outer world. However, what good is outer mastery with inner slavery?
-How do we master the inner world? How do we abide in the Self?
-Glory of Bhagavan Shankaracharya Ji
-If we can master our mind, we can master everything else. Everything ties to the quality and texture of the mind
-Viveka comes from the Sanskrit root word ‘Vich’ which means to separate/discern. Viveka means to discern between option A & B and make the right choice. The whole spiritual life begins with discernment.
-Vivekachudamani teaches us to discern between real and unreal.
-Of the several virtues needed for enlightenment, Viveka is a very special one.
-The main topic of Vivekachudamani is answers to the series of 7 questions student asks in the 49th verse:
o What is bondage?
o How has it come about?
o How is it sustaining?
o How can I be free from it?
o What is Not Self?
o What is nature of Self?
o What is process of separating Self & Not Self? (discern between Self & Not Self)
Invocation Verse:
•The purpose of the invocation prayer is to ensure that the fruits of this study manifest in our lives. May the results (phala shruti) of these teachings, Joy, Bliss and removal of sorrow be realized in our everyday actions and experiences.
•A prayer for unwavering commitment to the path, despite obstacles, and for dedicated, sincere study.
•The Author prays for the ego to not rise, as that would distort the pure essence of these teachings.
