There’s a beautiful verse in the Bible, James 4:8, that says, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” Fasting is a direct, powerful way to draw near. In fasting, we abandon the things that satisfy us momentarily to find eternal satisfaction in God. The Bible shows us that when people humbled themselves through fasting, God listened and responded in mighty ways. Look at the story of Daniel. When he fasted and prayed, an angel appeared to him, saying, “Your words were heard, and I have come because of your words” (Daniel 10:12). Imagine that! Fasting not only catches God’s attention, but it brings forth His response.

The very act of fasting acknowledges that God is the source of all things. We’re telling Him, “God, I rely on You for more than food.
