Every 4 January is martyrs day in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) a day to commemorate and honour the victims of human rights violations and also those that fought tirelessly for the independence of Congo. In 1959, on that day a group of ABAKO wanted to hold a meeting in Leopoldville now known as Kinshasa. The Begium colonists prohibited them from holding their meeting which outraged them to protest. These protests would inspire the popular demand for political independence and emancipation. Joseph Kasavubu and Practice Lumumba were among the party organisers and would be later be imprisoned by the colonel regime.

Today many Africans think that political independence that doesn’t contribute to the social and economic development of the citizens is just a bluff and hoax. Surprisingly African today faces a huge challenge of debt and are kept in bondage. Congo’s rich mineral deposits have disabilise its region and caused a huge humanitarian crisis today. Kwame Nkrumah a prominent Pan-Africanist once said "If we allow the independence of the Congo to be compromised in any way by the imperialists and colonialist, the whole of Africa will be exposed to grave risk."
