"THREE (3) PRINCIPLES OF MORTIFICATION"

THIS WEEK.

- ref.. Colossians 3.1-17
- To the Colossians. So marvelous was their new found freedom. They are ”already saved”, “already set free from the bondage of sin”
- Now, there is already a conflict.
- They already experienced the “already” aspect of grace and now on the “not yet” aspect.
- Christian life opposes the normal current of the world. It really requires so much effort.
- We are already justified but not yet fully sanctified.

1. OUR NEW IDENTITY IN CHRIST
- ref. Colossians 3.1-4
- We are already in Christ and no longer in Adam.
- We are now Christ’s. We are no longer in the flesh but now living in the new.
- We have been raised in Christ.
- Our life is hidden with him. we are so united with Christ that Christ will manifest himself in the fulness of His glory with us.
- Christians often forget our true identity in Christ.
- We should remind ourselves of our identity. We are in the Lord Jesus Christ
- ref. Colossians 3.5-11

2. THE WORKINGS OF SINS IN EVERY AREA OF OUR LIVES
- We must not limit our thinking that we should just deal with a particular sin (pr pur besetting sin). All sins must be dealt with.
- We take of our private sins and our private life
- ref. Colossians 3.8 (Public sina)
- ref. Colossians 3.9 (Sins inside the church - applicable to believers and their church life)
- The challenge of mortification
- Mortifying of sin is a “whole of life” change

3. PRACTICAL GUIDANCE FOR MORTIFYING SIN
- 3a. “Learn to admit sin for what it really is.”
- An evil desire is called idolatry. Call sin as it is.
- 3b. “Look at sin In the light of God’s view of sin. “
- We do not look at sin like the world. Sin is NOT entertaining.
- The wrath of God is coming. Sin incurs God’s holy divine unpleasure.
- ref. 1 John 3.9
- Take a heaven’s eye view feel the same of that of once
- Romans 6.21
- 3c. “Recognize the inconsistency of our sin.”
- We should be on guard. ALL sin is inconsistent with saving grace. ALL sin is in contradiction of Christ.
- 3d. “Kill sin.”
- Refuse it. Starve it. Kill it.
- There is no “big” or “small” sins.
- We could not mortify sin without the pain of the “kill”
- Romans 13.14 (The opposite of mortification - Vivification)
- Colossians 3.12-17 (Cultivating the opposite virtue of sin)
- Vivification is about
- Sinful habits should not just be rejected but should be exchanged with Christ-like habits (A glorious exchange)
- "We should not only reject sinful habits, we should also cultivate Christlike graces. This is our lifetime vocation." #hgcbccpulpit
- “Don’t trifle with sin”
